Rachelle

Introducing Lauren

Hi fellow hair lovers!

I’m Lauren, the new Editorial Intern here at Folica and I’m excited to be working with the stylish and savvy Rachelle.

Like everyone at Folica, I love hair. I like to keep my wavy hair long and super healthy, and that’s not easy since long hair is older and more “experienced” than short hair. I swear by a combination of great hair products and natural treatments that I find in my kitchen, and since I’m a foodie my kitchen is totally stocked.

My fascination with hair started as a very small child, when my mother kept my hair in a bob. It was a nice cut, required minimal upkeep on my mom’s part and she loved it, but I grew tired of it and she wouldn’t let me change. I started dreaming of long hair and making ridiculous wigs out of blankets (with mom’s help). Then the day came when I was old enough to take responsibility for my own hair and I grew it out. Think it hits about mid back now. :)

I discovered Folica about a year ago when my hair guru recommended some Davines products, that I have since fallen for. They were not easy to find, but Folica had them!

I’ve learned a lot about hair over the years and have a lot more to learn. Looking forward to sharing with you.

Wishing you a great hair day!

Farewell J & Happy Birthday HairJunky

Hey there everyone. Today marks the finale of my Folica adventure (tear), as I’ll be heading back to suburbia and schoolwork next week. I hope I’ve kept you and your hair happy this summer -  I’ve definitely added to my list of tricks while I was here, and many thanks to all of you! I’ll be sure to inform Rachelle of any notable hair breakthroughs on my end, so keep an eye out for “–J” posts. :)

To the Folica team, thanks for being awesome … especially you, Lizzy.

Jan, don’t miss me too much.

Rachelle, you and your hair are my two favorite findings of the summer, but you’re aware of that already.

And as for my fellow hair friends, fans, followers … thanks for contributing to my summer at Folica with your comments and advice. I’ll be taking all of your tips with me. And if you’re still too scared to submerge your locks in edibles, well…

 Until next time,

–J

HairJunky & Jillian. Photo by Jan. Location: Rooftop, per Jan’s suggestion and accessible only via climbing out a window. Totally worth it for that Grand Central Station backdrop, right?

And hey! It’s my birthday! What should I splurge on? My hair deserves something pretty special for putting up with me this long. Also: necessary birthday-girl hairstyle = crown braid.

Farewell to Jillian - the first HairJunky Jr. (though I suspect we’ll hear from her often) and Happy Friday all.

5 Back to School Must-Haves

With summer ending oh-so-quickly and Back to School season approaching, a Folica shopping spree is totally necessary. Over the past 3 months, I’ve had the opportunity of testing every product at my Folica-fingertips. This involved likes and dislikes, or should I say… miracles and disasters (instructions are there for a reason).  Of course, the miracles are currently in my shopping cart and will be coming with me back to school, along with countless new HairJunky tricks of the trade.

Here’s my selection:

  1. Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray: Instantly turns my hair into fun beach hair.
  2. Tigi Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff: Makes straight hair smoother and adds awesome shine
  3. Oscar Blandi Volumizing Dry Shampoo: Definite must for those 20-minutes-to get-ready-no-time-to-wash-and-straighten-my-greasy-hair days.
  4. Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Crème: It adds an awesome amount of texture and shine to either straight or curly hair, not to mention the very pretty herbal smell- kind of eucalyptus and lavender-esque.

And last but not least, (drumroll…) a bit of good news:

5.  The Hot Tools Ceramic Tourmaline Deep Waver is back in stock on Folica! As Rachelle was just discussing, wavers are totally a go-to fave. What I love about this is that I can wave my hair and not have to worry about my roots. I leave them curly, this way I have more volume and the waves look natural. Definitely my new best friend.

Go back to school with great hair (and great deals). Check out Folica’s Back to School Shop!

Any more product suggestions for me before i go?

Product Testing Fun

Hi all. As you know, it’s been a summer of testing and experimenting for me here in Hair Land. I’ve had little gifts of discovery every other day but yesterday was like … Christmas.

When I got to work, Rachelle directed me to this box:

Yup, told you, jackpot. A box like this can only mean one thing: Product Play Day! So, this morning I arrived with wet hair and tried just about everything (okay, give or take a few).

My favorite findings:

Considering the fact that I went product-testing crazy, (all six are in my hair at the moment) I can’t judge exactly how each product works individually. What I will tell you though, is what they smell like, how they feel and that none of them made my hair crunchy, sticky or notably greasy.

From left to right:

  1. Rusk Blofoam Extreme Texturizer and Root Lifter: a slightly watery foam, amazing clean smell.
  2. TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff: slight shimmer, very smooth and silky, strong sweet smell that will last all day.
  3. Redken Fresh Curls Curl Boost Spray Gel: sprays on like hairspray, not too stiff, doesn’t have much of a scent.
  4. Kerastase Oleo-Curl Definition Cream: very light texture, fruity (but not too fruity) smell. Two thumbs up.
  5. Rusk Jel Fx Firm Hold Styling Gel: nice light gel- not too thick nor too thin, smells like…gel.
  6. Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Creme: thick and pasty- just oily enough, strong herbal smell- very pretty.

No complaints on this end!

Tomorrow I’ll tell you the 5 must-have back to school products that Folica introduced me to. Stay tuned ;)

Summer Hair Challenge: Zero Products

Fellow hair fans over at No More Dirty Looks have a theory: Less (product) is more (fabulous hair).

“We all wage war with our hair on a semiregular basis, and we want to see what happens when we switch to nontoxic, nonstripping products, and then leave our manes alone.”

To test the idea that free hair is happiest, they’re challenging readers to wash with a simple, non-toxic shampoo, comb and then leave hair completely alone to air-dry. This Friday, they’ll share the pictures and we’ll see the results of a whole lot of  “naked hair, air-dried.” The No More Dirty Looks ladies started things off by posting their own photos (below) and Jan has already submitted hers. Your turn! (And then HairJunky will follow up to see what there is to this theory.)

Emma Goes Pixie

According to Emma Watson’s Facebook fan page, she went for the ever daring pixie cut!

She says: “Emma Watson: Dear all. Cut my hair off a few days ago… Feels incredible. I love it. I’ve wanted to do this for years and years; it’s the most liberating thing ever. Hope you like. Big love from Emma x”

I say: Amazing. She can TOTALLY pull it off. It takes quite a bit of bravery to chop off long locks, but once it’s done, it’s an awesome look.

If she can do it, you can too. Need a push? I’ll talk you into it :)

Happy Friday!

Weekly Hair Recipe: Mayo

Two weeks ago, I asked you for food-in-my-hair requests. Most popular? Mayonnaise.

Lauren, one of our lovely readers, gave me a bit of confidence: “I have let mayonnaise sit in my hair before as a conditioner, it made my hair softer and shinier!”

Agreed.

If your hair is thick and unruly like mine, be brave and give it a try. For those with thinner hair, go with a reduced-fat mayonnaise (less fat = less grease), or use a regular mayo and rinse it out right away, this way you won’t be left with a greasy residue.

An experiment like this one wouldn’t feel right without a warning, so here I go… we’re talking about mayonnaise here. It’s not the most pleasant thing to put in your hair- I’m sure you knew that was coming. BUT it is full of fat, and, well, fats tend to do fabulous things to your tendrils. I didn’t leave it in for very long (probably about 3 minutes), and it seemed to act the same as a regular conditioner would: smoothed, added shine …  you know the deal. I do plan to try it again though next time leaving it in as if it were a masque. (10 to 15 minutes or so.) I’m predicting the effects of a super-duper deep conditioner. I’ll keep ya posted.

Any other requests? My current to-do list is looking like a coconut oil, almond oil, almond butter trio. Warning free? I think yes.

HairJunky Fieldtrip: Batiste Dry Shampoo Demo

Here at Folica, we’re still talking about dry shampoo. This time, the brand on our brains is Batiste. Buyers Lauren, Charlene and I took a trip to Union Square today with our Flip Cam to visit the Batiste Dry Shampoo tent for some demos. The lovely Batiste hairstylist, Christine, demonstrated how to use the product, leaving all three of us with super fresh hair. Lauren and Charlene both said that their hair was a bit flat today, but once the Batiste was in they noticed more volume. My hair, on the other hand, wasn’t necessarily what I would consider flat, but the shampoo definitely left my hair feeling refreshed. Thanks, Batiste!

Action:

Lauren, Charlene and I all chose the Blush scent. It was a bit flowery, but not too overpowering. The Original scent was very basic and simple, but also smelled nice. I haven’t personally tried the Tropical scent, but I’ve heard great things. All are definitely great options if you need a quick hair fix, and they’re super affordable! If you’ve tried it, let me know how you like!
