Hair-To Tuesday Recap: Curling with Hot Tools

Last week it was Hair-To Tuesday at Folica headquarters again.

This month it was all about curling. Hot Tools sponsored the event and stylists from La Bottega Salon came prepared with models and curling techniques to teach to the crowd.

New York bloggers in attendance included (but were not limited to) Shyema Azam from Beauty and the Feast and Emily Kroop from A Better Roni and representing StyledOn.

The Folica Hair-To team brought a feast of fruit, cheese, hummus, sweets and wine, which eased any attendee or stylist jitters about curling in front of an audience or for the first time. (And there was at least one attendee who’d never used a curling iron before.)

The stylists demonstrated not only how to curl, but how to then style the curls. From leaving them down and flowing to side-sweeping or pining into a pretty updo, there were a handful of holiday looks that attendees could then try on their own.

The mondo gift bags were distributed (hair dryers, curling irons, products and accessories for everyone) …

and then the DIYing began.

Stylists circulated, giving one-on-one consultations and personalized tips. When one attendee declared that her hair had never once held a curl, stylist Jay declared the night’s mission: No one walks out the door without fabulous curls.

By the time the hors d’ oeuvres had been devoured, it was Mission Accomplished and Hair-To had successfully taught another handful of friends how-to. Bravo!

Every month the mission is different. What would you like to learn how to do? (I’m voting for hot rollers.)

And if you’d like to attend, stay tuned. I’ll let you know as soon as the next is on the calendar!

Announcing: Holiday Hair How-To Winners. And, Alexa Chung.

For the last few weeks, we’ve been looking at the lovely Folica staffers’ Holiday Hair How-To DIY tips and tricks. The accompanying contest asked you to tell us which product or tool you’d use to get the week’s look. And you did.

The winners are … … …

announced right after this random piece of hair news:

Alexa Chung got a haircut. She debuted it at the 2010 Trophee Des Arts Gala at New York City’s Plaza Hotel last night. (With date, Marc Jacobs. Jealous. BTW I love her. Who doesn’t?)

About the cut, she said: It was inspired by my horselike face, which was looking increasingly disgusting with every inch that was added, so I lopped it off for the sake of the jawline,” she explained. “Hard-hitting news.

Thoughts? Just want to know who won the contest? Okok.

Joe and Lauren!

CONGRATS! Thank you for playing. Fun, non? Email me your addresses and I will send you one of these:

And one of these (to one of you – I’ll flip a coin):

And the other winner will get the mini clipless curling iron you see here. Sorry, don’t have an individual pic:

Made a new vid:

What do you think? Honestly. We’re kind of new at this so constructive criticism is totally appreciated. :)

Sharing Hair Love

Look guys, we made a good hair day!

Tuesday was Hair-To Tuesday at headquarters and StyledOn writer Emily “” finally learned how to curl her hair. :)

She said:

We learned a “fancy bun” (the only one I’ve truly mastered), a Jessica Alba updo and a Taylor Swift updo. I also learned that all curls have different names. The above curls are Victoria’s Secret curls slash Sarah Jessica Parker curls (cause they’re really messy underneath). You should check out their blog, HairJunky, it has lots of practical advice if, like me, you suck at doing hair.

Props! Check out the rest of her post (and very fresh life/style blog where runway duds meet Nike dunks and we get to see what she wore sock shopping) at A Better Roni.

Announcing: Folica’s Reviewer of the Week

Once a week, one random reviewer receives a free flat iron.

That’s all there is to it.

Write a review and it could be you.

This new program is super exciting. I’ll do a contest for it soon. And once we have a few weeks of winners, we’ll make a special spot to congratulate them.

Spread the word! (and if you’ve been dilly dallying, now’s the time to write those reviews!)

Sally Hershberger on HairJunky, HSN

In promotion of her Salon line’s launch on HSN, Sally Hershberger is on a blog tour (how modern). Today she gave us an exclusive look at her favorite tools – always in her bag of tricks:

  1. Super Solano Hair Dryer – My favorite dryer on the market! It is so strong and if I need a great blow out in a rush it gets the job done.  Heat tools are tricky; even though they add shine after you’re done using them, they also dull your hair in the long run.  The Super Solano has 5 temperature options so when my hair is feeling over-worked I’ll dry it on a lower setting to prevent any additional damage. {SuperSolano The Original}
  2. Mason Pearson Paddle Brush (popular or junior style with boar bristles) – Worth every penny these natural boar bristle brushes smooth the cuticle down more than brushes made with artificial bristles so they give hair a much shinier and healthy appearance. {Mason Pearson}
  3. Medium Size Claw clipsI’m crazy over using these to get beach-perfect bohemian waves. Here’s what you do-when the hair is damp, apply my Mineral Spray throughout the hair. The problem with most texture sprays is they have salt that dries the hair and dulls the color. So I discovered that if you get rid of the salt and instead, infuse the hair with natural moisturizers and earth minerals you get incredible movement, shape, and brilliance. Next, wrap 1-inch sections of your hair around your fingers and secure with a butterfly clip. Let the hair air dry, and when you take the clips out you will have insane waves. The, you can work my new Mineral Cream into the hair to smooth the flyaways. I like to twist and twirl the strands- especially around the face for a gorgeous style. The kit I’m bringing to HSN will have all you need to get this look- Mineral Spray, Mineral Cream, and the clips. And I’ll show you there how it’s done on November 22nd and 23rd! {claw clips}
  4. Conair Velcro roller multipack (from3/8, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 inch variety) – To create overall volume after blow drying I’ll spray my new product, Body Fix, underneath the top layer of the hair. Then I’ll put these Velcro rollers in. Dry volume is created and then after taking the rollers out you can build up even more body with your fingertips! It’s a great product to carry with you for an instant style lift- just flip your hair over your head, spray Body Fix, and come up for amazing volume. It is definitely more of a big hair look that’s ultra-sexy and the multi-pack roller idea is genius! {Conair roller sets}
  5. Bobby pinsBobby pins are a total must-have. If you are having trouble getting them to stay or have really fine hair criss-cross them or spritz with a little hairspray before pinning. They are the perfect trick to creating a quick updo, conceal bumps in the hair, or simply help accessorize your do. {bobby pins}

Sally stopped by Babble.com yesterday and Stylelist on Monday. Follow her! We’re (super) fans. You remember the amazing makeover she gave Jan … and her top colorist Erin won my heart with hand-painted highlights.
