Fiery Redheads

Hi all. Lauren here and The hair color that’s got me fired up this season is RED.

For me, autumn is a great time to find inspiration in the changing colors and red is my favorite fall color. But as much as Fall colors may take credit for the trend, some must still go to the lovely redhead Christina Hendricks of Mad Men. (Another notable redhead starlet is Emma Stone, of course.)

Emma Stone:

Sadly, red tends to fade faster than most hair colors. So if you’re not a natural redhead and even if you are, you should definitely take extra care to keep your color fresh. My hair guru, Jaime Lewis, recommends using shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for red hair. Try John Frieda’s Radiantly Red which can be used on natural and colored red hair.

Are you red or headed in that direction? Any tricks, trials or tails to share?

Happy Fall,

Lauren

Naked Ponytail

Hey there. Lauren here. And today, I’d like to talk about the incredibly versatile ponytail.

There are so many things to love about wearing a ponytail. It’s a classic, but it’s also trendy. This season, the big ponytail trend is the naked ponytail. By naked, I mean no elastics or any other visible hair accessories. Surprisingly easy to do, this look only requires a hair tie, a bobby pin or two, and a few minutes. To achieve this look, use the elastic to hold the ponytail and wrap around a section of your hair from below the elastic. Then secure that section of hair underneath the ponytail with a bobby pin or two. I love this style because it’s super easy and makes my look more polished.

Here are two pictures of the naked ponytail.  Kim Kardashian wears it high and Jessica Simpson wears it low.

If you were digital, how would you do your hair?

Busy Scissors, Redken’s new video game for Nintendo Wii and DS is out this month. In it, you get to play star-stylist to clients in a Hollywood based salon. It’s a race to fame that you win by earning points successfully performing the latest cut, color or style trends.

I found it interesting that “each salon technique was demonstrated and filmed by stylists from the Redken team before it was re-created in 3D and designed as a mini-game.” {stylelist}

(Think they used the NVIDIA graphics chip we saw back in March?)

According to Senior Director of Interactive for Redken, Rachel Weiss: “We are excited to share the behind-the-scenes salon professional experience with our clients via Busy Scissors. [It’s] a new way for consumers to connect and engage with Redken by allowing them to interact directly with Redken products in the virtual salon.”

Will you play it???

One of the articles I read about it mentioned the fun of being able to try a different look every day without having to commit to a cut or color. If you could try any look tomorrow, what would it be?

I think I’d go for a platinum blond pixie. :)

NYFW: 3 Fave Hair Trends & Backstage Photos

The whirlwind that is New York Fashion Week attracted trendsetters from all across the globe and HairJunky was there to scout out the newest hairstyles and how-tos for spring. From backstage and the front row, here are a few of our favorite finds and snapshots.

Top chignons (not to be confused with top buns) at Rosa Cha, by Ric Pipino and Jean Marc of Pipino Nolita and the Revolution in Cut product line. Yes, the dynamic duo from our salon visit a couple of weeks ago. (We shot a bunch of video that day that I’m still working on. One of the clips is uploading as we speak. Stay tuned!)

Ric and Jean did the hair for the Rosa Cha show and then alice + olivia immediately afterward and we were lucky enough to tag along.

Another highlight of the week was Logan Neitzel’s presentation, which I actually helped produce. (You may remember him from Project Runway?) He and I have mutual hairstylist friends from Gene Juarez Salons in Seattle and the whole crew of them (6 total) flew out to NY to style the show. They brought pre cut and colored wigs that they could fit on the girls and then style quickly. Clever, I thought. And it made for lighter suitcases. The models liked the idea less though – an hour into the show I had to sneak them backstage one at a time to snip the elastic on the inside of the wig to loosen it.

Bonus: The stylists left us with a duffel bag full of products.

P.S. I’d wear everything Neitzel makes, but my favorite piece to date are his leather epaulettes. To me, they serve the same purpose as the messy bangs and ponytail look: add a little toughness to something soft or polished.

And if I had to stand behind one trend from the week though, it’d be the 70s hair (and clothes, makeup, accessories …). The best thing about that decade is that the there was a hairstyle for every hair texture. Curly? Go big with it and embrace an afro. Wavy? Try feathered layers ala Farrah Faucet. Straight? We all know that one: center part, long and sleek and if you’re really in the mood, try a headband around your crown.

Phew Fashion Week. Back to business as usual. Have a great weekend!

New York Fashion Week Hair

This is one of my favorite times of the year. New York overflows with models, photographers and all sorts of fashion-ists. There are more shows than any single body can attend but it’s fun (and exhausting) to try. With three days remaining and my heels hardly intact, let’s pause for a sec to take a look at what’s hot in hair so far:

Alexander Wang

The BFF of the cool girls and master of slouchy style stepped lightly this season, trading in the wet greasy grunge for white and painted hair. Models looked like angelic versions of the warriors we’ve seen so much of recently and the painted sections resembled feathers – a curious result.

The skin was also to-die-for. Dewy, radiant and a bit silver. Somehow, even the septum piercing seemed pretty. (Sorry, mom.)

“Spring was also a reaction to the ubiquity of a look that [Wang] had a hand in popularizing: ‘If everyone does a skinny jean and motorcycle jacket, it isn’t new anymore, is it?’” – Style.com

Marc Jacobs

He said: 70s. We said: Frizz! Surreal. So fine. If you’ve got it naturally, get ready to embrace. If not, I suggest:

Jacobs wasn’t the only one to reference The Me Decade. Halston’s (of course) hippie hair was unabashed:

Most Creative goes to Carolina Herrera who was inspired by “the traditional clothes of Korea, and botanical plates collected in the eighteenth century.”

(Genius, why have I never seen a hair-covered clip??)

Hair at Diane von Furstenberg was a very simple messy bun …

… balanced by AHmazing makeup.

Are these photos not candy?!

It was more poppy makeup and bangs for everyone at Preen:

And what about the beloved side braid? I spotted one at Lela Rose but predict a phase out. To be replaced with … ??? it may be too soon to say…

Two more days remain before the shows move to London where we’ll surely see more inspiring styles. Any favorite looks so far?

Immediately I can say that it’s refreshing to see lightness and polish. I won’t be waiting until spring to pretty-up.

Urban Outfitters & J.Crew Hairstyling Inspiration

Beautiful flying hair on the cover of the new U.O. Fall Catalog!

J.Crew always does gorgeous hair too. Masters of the unstyled style, no?  Shiny and whispy … romantic but not overdone … sophisticated, feminine and playful. I love it and it makes me want to embrace natural texture. Encourage hair to be free, rather than fighting it. Which sounds like the Folica, “Is your hair getting enough playtime?” tagline. :)

Contest Update

Rachel (Rae) sent us photos so we can see what we’re working with.

Rae says: They show my hair at various lengths, although it’s about 2 inches below my shoulder now, at its longest, plus some semi-shaggy layers and freshly cut side swept bangs. (My “pic in dress” being the bridesmaid dress of course.) I’m not lacking in number of hairs, but it is very very fine.

Not huge on hair maintenance so I got a global keratin treatment about a month ago. (Hence the bangs!) So minimal frizz, minimal waves, but minimal volume/spunk/oomph, which I want.

P. S. The bride is doing a low loose and to-the-side messy bun, which is my normal go-to, which is part of why I’m suddenly, sadly, helpless.

SO excited to see how this goes. Thank you so much!
