Hair Treatments – Who Knew?

I learned some very interesting facts this week while working on a bunch of new tips and how-to guides for Hair 101.

One day I was studying hair brushes and the next day it was gels and glues research. Mousses, masks, shampoos and more – it never ceases to amaze me how much there is to know about hair, products and tools.

For example: Do you know the difference between a mask, a hair treatment and a deep conditioner?

I didn’t. Answer:

Hair treatments are like multivitamins for your mane and different types provide different services. E.g., deep conditioners hydrate, clarifying treatments clean and keratin treatments straighten (there’re lots more). Treatments come in a variety of forms: liquids, oils, glazes or masks. Some are meant to be used with heat and others are best left on overnight. The benefits are many and more intense than daily products.

Check the table for identifying the right remedy for your mane:

3 Hair Treatment Tips:

1. Heat it up: After applying your mask or conditioner, wrap hair in a lightweight towel or shower cap and then use your hair dryer (on low volume, warm air) to heat up your hair. This opens your hair cuticles, which allows the conditioner to penetrate more deeply.

2. Sleep on it: Apply your treatment before bed, wrap hair in a high bun or a scarf that you don’t mind staining and wake up with deeply hydrated hair. We recommend a dedicated hair-mask pillowcase.

3. Braid it in: Apply your treatment to damp hair, braid and then wear all day for a style that multitasks – healing your hair and looking good too. This is an especially great summer hair solution. It saturates your hair which “waterproofs” it and helps protect from salt, sun or chlorine.

As a general rule, we advise using a hair treatment once a week but the drier your hair, the more often you should deep condition. Lots of us use a deep conditioner or mask on the ends of our hair every time we wash.

Use the table above as a guide, but mix it up too! You may find that your hair likes different treatments depending on the season (summer humidity vs. winter dryness). Whatever your need, there’s a treatment with the fix.

Thank you for the tips =)

  1. Those moisture treatments are great to wear to the pool or the beach. When you wet your hair and apply those, the hair strand soaks it up like a sponge, It can’t soak up seawater or chlorine. =) Also, contrary to popular belief: damaged hair, meaning chemically, or by sun damage needs protien. Moisture is for frizz. I know that the protien treaments don’t leave it feeling silky but your hair is stronger..if you use a serum when you’re styling it’ll feel soft. L’Anza make some WONDERFUL products for this.

When trying to find the right product, think of your hair cuticle as shingles on a roof. If they were weak and not providing any protection, you wouldn’t make them softer..you’s add more strength. Hence, the protien. Heat spreads the shingles open and allows the emollients to penetrate. So, at the end of your blowdry, hairstyle..a nice shot of cold air will help seal the cuticle and thereby keep your style lasting longer. Shine comes from all the shingles on your cuticle laying flat an in the same direction. Don’t even get me started on the right kind of brush!!

I hope every days’ a good hair day for you in 2011, dear.

  2. Oooo…we just recently added Kerastase to our products (this one included). I haven’t tried it yet but perhaps I will soon!
