Hot on the heels of yesterday’s short hair appreciation comes Refinery29′s story today about the Best Short Hairstyles for Fall.
The Curly Bob is #1 (The Boy Cut and The Messy Bob following it up) which you may recall was my claim to HerCut fame earlier in the year.
The woman on the right up in the first photo is Yasmin Sewell, the Chief Creative Consultant for Liberty of London and one of my favorite fashion icons. She has fantastic style – a functional, classic, eclecticism – and her hair always looks great.
She’s worn it short and curly for years and I appreciate that it never looks over- or under-done. That can be challenging for curly girls.
Pre Keratin and Brazilian Blowout, I was on a mission to master that: simply, nicely styled hair, every day. (Oh, actually, I just went back to find the post and see that I would have been happy with good hair “four days a week”.) {Spring Training: Rachelle’s Style Revamp} That lead to Trend Run, which lead to the Keratin treatment, which lead to the Brazilian Blowout … ah how far we’ve come.
Glamour Beauty spotlighted Hilary Swank and Frieda Pinto who both wore curly, faux bobs on the red carpet last night. I love it! I forgot that I used to style my hair this way. It’s great if you have layers (they make a convince short cut), or if you’re looking for a new way to wear your hair off your neck. I’d just pin the longest layers up under the rest and let it be a little loose. Maybe I’ll try it tomorrow.
What do you think? Have you tried this style?
Earlier this year, Stylelist touted the return of the perm, which is easy enough to smile at knowingly and then stay far, far away from, but when they suggest the treatment as a base to a whole new set of hairstyles, we do a double take.
The idea is that rather than being stuck with the single Curly Sue slinky spirals, you start with big loose curls that you can then either enhance or unravel for a less ‘done’, free sort of wave:
“Perms are not meant for that tight curl look anymore,” Anthony Linzalone, a celebrity hair stylist at Pierre Michel Salon, tells StyleList. Instead, get one for body and the option to wear it curly or to blow it out and just have soft waves, which are much more in style right now.”
I also really liked Linzalone’s advice to let the curls “drop” with long layers and looseness, rather than trying for tight curls. I discovered this technique a few years ago and am actually doing it today. Inspired by:
For loose curls:
The fact that the perm trend is riding in on the wave of keratin treatments and brazilian blowouts makes me imagine armies of curlies vs. straights. Who will win?
And, the real question: would you get a perm?
Once upon a time, I modeled in an ad campaign for a hair care company. {HerCut Photo Shoot at Pier 59 Studios}
Today, I saw the first of the two-days-worth of photo and video that we shot.
Ads on NaturallyCurly (A great blog for curly girls and Michelle actually stopped by Folica for a visit last week!)
Folica will begin carrying HerCut in July. Now I’m curious: What are your thoughts on cut-specific products? What do you do differently if you’re styling a cut rather than a hair type? Interesting concept … we’ll investigate.
RealBeauty’s write-up on Alice in Wonderland-style surreal curls got me thinking.
I like that these curls *don’t look natural. That’s fun, right? In the same way that pastel hair is. Or satin-braided buns. And, remember when I nodded at the doll hair trend?
Maybe we have Gaga to thank, maybe Alice, maybe planetary rotation (recently adjusted, did you know?), or maybe it’s a reaction to pop’s dark phase (e.g. the Twilight epidemic to, and this (not that I’m not a fan)):
But, watch out for a fairytale fad. Let’s call it … FantasyLand. Whimsical shapes, styles, colors and cuts. Romantic … indulgent … wee! It’ll be a grrreat year for hair adventures. Send me photos if you do them, see them or dream them.
And about those ringlets up there: whether you’re curly-haired, or would like to be Folica has pretty much everything you need. I’ve barely started testing my way through this list but trust – reports will follow.

It’s heaven below curl crème (a Folica buyer-favorite is hair rules Curly Whip) on freshly washed hair, and to moisturize dry ends or revive frizzy curls on the days I don’t wash.
It doesn’t feel like an extra product — more a drink for thirsty strands. My hair has been thicker, smoother and healthier since first use.
I bought it after comparing products and reading all of the glowing customer reviews on Folica. Let this be mine.
Recommend 100%.
Morning friends! Starting the day off strong with DailyCandy’s slideshow of Haute Hair Trends for Fall.
So many fun little tricks to try! I see several simple updates that would refresh a look.
A side-pony+center-part+headband combo is just as easy as a messy bun and oh so much more pulled together.
Folica carries some pretty headbands. This design from France Luxe is one of my favorites.
This look would also be a fun way to try out extensions.
Onward with the haute! Diagonal part across the crown? Genius.
And what’s this one?? It looks like my hair (well, before I cut it). Some straight, some curly – do you like or is it a mess? Or both?!
And this looks like our buyers’ romp with the crimpers yesterday.

What’s your favorite? Will you try any of these? If you send me pictures, I will post them! Unless you don’t want me to, of course. I’m going to try each look. See ya!
