HairJunky at Pipino Nolita Salon

Yesterday, Ric Pipino invited HairJunky to his NYC salon. Charlene (one of our fab buyers and who you may remember from the lash enhancer product test) and I were only planning to spend a couple of hours there but the hair-doing just didn’t quit and we ended up staying all day.

Mission: Get to know Ric, scout out the space and learn about his product line, Revolution in Cut.

Status: Accomplished, very.

Report: Some sneak peek photos below. Videos, interview and tips-tricks-whatever-else-you-want-to-know to come.

Spoils: I got a Brazilian Blowout. Yeah, sort of spontaneous but it was at Ric’s behest, and now I can compare it to the Keratin treatment firsthand. Anything you want to know about it? I’m *sure some of you have had the treatment. Let’s talk about Brazilian Blowouts, shall we?

I’ll work up a full recount  for you – photos and video included of course.

Hope you’re all happy, healthy and having great hair days. Yes?

x, R

Waiting is worth it in this room.

Plus a very lovable jewelry case. Pamela Love beside Vintage Gucci Goblets …

HairJunky in the chair. Ric Pipino on deck.

“Oh, you know, can you give me a cut that like, styles itself?”

“And, this is what I have to work with, eh?” (Quotes mine. ;) )

He says: How about one that compliments your face shape instead?

Charlene’s turn! Ric says: Too much weight on top.

And then: lightning-fast trim time. (aka “pointing”)

Charlene’s After:

On the way to my After:

So straight and shiny.

P.S. Check out who made the chairs.

To Cut, or Not to Cut? Carrie Underwood Inspired …

Happy Friday hi! Today’s going to be a good HairJunky day. Starting it off with a debate: To Cut or Not To Cut?

Jillian has the haircut itch. (I think she should get one to start her HairJunky days off with something fresh!)

This is Jillian, (you met her yesterday).

She’s wondering if she can pull off Carrie Underwood’s collarbone length with long front layers:

Jillian’s not looking to change her color, but maybe we can inspire her too. What do you think: Should she cut her hair? If so, what cut do you see her with? And, color change or stay the same?

Modeling: HairJunky as Curly Bob

Once upon a time, I modeled in an ad campaign for a hair care company. {HerCut Photo Shoot at Pier 59 Studios}

Today, I saw the first of the two-days-worth of photo and video that we shot.

Ads on NaturallyCurly (A great blog for curly girls and Michelle actually stopped by Folica for a visit last week!)

Folica will begin carrying HerCut in July. Now I’m curious: What are your thoughts on cut-specific products? What do you do differently if you’re styling a cut rather than a hair type? Interesting concept … we’ll investigate.

HerCut Photo Shoot at Pier 59 Studios

A short while before I worked here, my agency called to see if I’d be interested in trying out to shoot a new ad campaign. Something about hair they said. Ha, of course, my hair has been center stage since I first started modeling. I think Rent! and say yes! and they send me more details the day of the casting.

The campaign will be for hair company HerCut, which produced a line of goods with a unique concept: Style your cut, not your hair type. (I learn more later: Based on five different cuts (bob, pixie, shag, long layers, etc.) “cut-specific polymers combined with controlled positive, negative and neutral charges deliver the specific, optimal styling benefits each cut needs to look its best.”)

Since it was a hair campaign, I showed up for the casting with natural curls in full effect. Typically, I go to castings with a tamer look because the mane tends to scare potential clients. (Fair.) For this one though, I let it loose and they liked it immediately.

Castings most often involve a (really) quick introduction and maybe a snapped polaroid. This one was a little bit different. I was introduced to a choreographer and asked to learn a quick dance routine – 30 seconds maybe – I could just watch her once or twice and then perform it for the dozen or so client and agency reps lined up and watching from across the room. And, they’d like to videotape it. Okay?

I resisted the urge to duck and run, put on my game face and danced. It included a lot of hair tossing, they loved it, and I got the job.

My character (cut) was “Curly Bob”. We spent two full days shooting photo and video – posing and dancing around with bouncing curls on a set that looked like an airplane hangar and was manned by a crew of 50. It was as exhausting and exhilarating as shoots always are.

Fun bit: Kyan Douglas, the ‘grooming expert’ from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Emmy Award-winning beauty expert is HerCut’s brand ambassador. And ever-charming of course.

When the campaign goes live, I will let you know.

Fun bit part duex: My first day at Folica, our designer Jan mentions something about the creative she’d just received from the new brand we were bringing in, something about styling your cut …
