Hi. :) & 2 Products for a Heat-Proof Top Bun

Hello and Happy Tuesday HairJunky readers, friends, followers, et al. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend. HairJunky had the day off yesterday, which I spent in a loose braid and shades (these to be exact – they my fave) …

with a sweating glass of street-side Sauvignon Blanc. (It was 98 degrees too hot to think.) Oh, found a pic. Post braid and yeah, when no one was looking last week, I gave myself bangs again. HaWhoops.

Anyway, we’re back action today and rocking a top bun to make use of yesterday’s wavy volume and today’s temps necessitating hair-off-the-neck. Products:

  1. Oscar Blandi Pronto Gloss. Because: it’s a heat protectant, anti-frizz, UV guard and contains light reflectors like my secret weapon, Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer. (I’ve been using the Pronto Gloss almost daily and receiving compliments. Same thing happened with that illuminator. Light reflectors, I’m telling you. We’re all attracted to shiny things.) Used it only around my hairline where I flat ironed for smoothness. Left the rest a mess for a big, poofy top bun.

Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray. Because: I was feeling brand-loyal and love the scent of this spray (honeysuckle). + it adds a lightweight hold and subtle shine.

And now that we’re all reacquainted, let’s get down to business. I think, it’s time to shift the HairJunky focus.

We’ve been talking about curls, Keratin treatments, frizz-fighting and generally how to live with a heavy head of unruly kinks, coarseness and volume but how about the opposite side of the spectrum?

To start off the subject, how about we help out a fellow hair fan with her fine-thin-lifeless hair challenge? {Remake Rosie’s Routine}

Hair fans! I hinted at a special Oscar Blandi project last month {Oscar Blandi Salon Visit} and, here it is: Dry Shampoo How-To video with Oscar Blandi.

What do you think? I learned a ton. I’d only tried dry shampoo a couple of times before (unsuccessfully) but since this visit, I’ve been experimenting, learning what I can about using it so I can report back to, well you of course. I also didn’t know that dry shampoo had so many uses (cleaning, volumizing, texturizing – giving second-day hair whether you’re starting with clean hair, or reversing dirty hair by a couple of days).

Speaking of fun learnings, you’ve all found some great facts for the Dry Shampoo Contest. A couple of my favorites so far:

From Mea: “Boots reports a 45% rise in sales of dry shampoo in the past year, suggesting that, far from being an excuse to go all Swampy, the new generation of dry shampoos offers a practical alternative to a daily wash and blow-dry.”

This is from the Sunday Times, 3/30/2008. So I bet there’s been a bigger increase in sales of dry shampoo in 2009 and 2010, since the number of dry shampoos on the market has more than tripled, if not quadrupled.

From Margaret: I’m all about organic recipes for beauty related stuff so this article was pretty cool: http://beauty.thefuntimesguide.com/2010/01/dry_shampoo.php

There actually a lot of homemade ways of creating your own dry shampoo without shelling out the cash! That’s pretty awesome corn meal is highly recommended!

From Valerie: “In India, a variety of herbs and their extracts are used as shampoos. A very effective shampoo is made by boiling soapnuts with dried gooseberry (amla) and a few other herbs, using the strained extract. This leaves the hair soft, shiny and manageable. Another product used is the mustard cakes left after extraction of mustard oil…” {Link}

What else do we want to know about dry shampoo? I think we need product reviews. And, I’m pretty sure Jan is planning to test some this weekend. :)

Oscar Blandi Salon Visit

If you follow HairJunky on Twitter, you know that yesterday we were on a little mission at Oscar Blandi salon. What ever were we up to?

You’ll just have to wait and see. It’ll probably be worth it. But meanwhile, here’re some teaser photos and a couple of fun facts about the salon.

Oscar Blandi NYC is home to:

  • 30+ stylists and colorists,
  • A manicurist, facialist and a trichologist. (Say what? “Trichology is the branch of medicine that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp.” Wiki)
  • A mini jewelry boutique, (Oscar said clients come in and get their cut or color, feel great and then want top it off with something extra special, so, they buy some jewelry.)
  • And, an espresso bar.

At the salon cafe with Oscar:

  • Oscar says: May I offer you a coffee?
  • HairJunky says: I’d love one, thanks.
  • Oscar: What will it be, a Cappuccino? Americano?
  • HairJunky: An Espresso, please.
  • Oscar: Or, would you like to try my favorite? I don’t even know what it’s called – it’s a secret recipe – he makes it just for me. It’s delicious.
  • HairJunky: When in Rome!

I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t a shot of espresso in cream, topped with hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream, topped with a drizzle of chocolate syrup topped with a dusting of … more chocolate.

I guess now Oscar’s secret is out. Or, at least one of them. The rest, I’ll deliver to you soon. Until then:
