Holiday Hair How-Tos & Contest

Holiday Hair How-Tos are live on Folica today and I’m loving seeing our headquarters hair fans in the limelight!

Check out our in-house Kardashian lookalike Charlene DIYing the Classic Evening Waves style:

AND, note the accompanying contest: email a photo and LIKE Folica on FB to win something rad.

This was a fun project to put together. Yours truly took the photos (in the conference room that’s notorious for hair-play by now) and each willing participant dived into boxes of products and tools in order to recreate the celebrity look.

What do you think? I hope you like! Which look is your favorite?

I think I’d like to highlight a look a week. And do a giveaway in conjunction with the Facebook contest. So, look #1 is Texture Tresses. Steps below and the giveaway goes like this:

In a comment, tell me which product or tool on Folica you would use to get this week’s style. (Include a link!)

Example: *I* would use Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray to get the Texture Tresses.

Bonus entry points (+1 extra entry each):

  1. ReTweet this contest.
  2. Share the contest on your Facebook page.
  3. Enlist your friends (if they mention you in their comment, you’ll both get an extra entry point).

Enjoy!

Currently Loving: Kerastase Reflection Chroma Riche

Kerastase says: “A luminous, softening, leave-in treatment for dry, highlighted, or color-treated hair. Leaves the hair fiber softer and more supple to the touch.

  • Detangling and styling ease
  • Protects from external aggressions
  • Maximizes colors radiance and shine

Apply 1-2 pumps of Kerastase Reflection Chroma Riche to clean, towel-dried hair. Do not rinse. Style as usual. If needed, use an additional pump on dry hair for increased shine.

HairJunky says: It’s a gem find (and not just because of the color) in my search for products that I can apply to dry, second- or third-day hair that needs rehydrating without heaviness or wetness. I use two small pumps, though one would probably be enough, and apply it to the ends of my hair. It’s very lightweight (maybe like super viscous water …) so I imagine it’d suit any hair texture well. (Not too heavy for fine hair, thicker manes would just get more.) It’s instant shine, sealed ends and softness. The shine makes my color sparkle, which makes me smile, which makes for a happy hair day. :)

P.S. Check out the reviews. It’s 1/5th of a vote away from a flawless record. Love!

Today I used it to tame some flyaways from a raining morning commute and finished with Blow Blow Out Spray (because the bottles match, and because the spray it smells like cotton candy.)

NYFW: 3 Fave Hair Trends & Backstage Photos

The whirlwind that is New York Fashion Week attracted trendsetters from all across the globe and HairJunky was there to scout out the newest hairstyles and how-tos for spring. From backstage and the front row, here are a few of our favorite finds and snapshots.

Top chignons (not to be confused with top buns) at Rosa Cha, by Ric Pipino and Jean Marc of Pipino Nolita and the Revolution in Cut product line. Yes, the dynamic duo from our salon visit a couple of weeks ago. (We shot a bunch of video that day that I’m still working on. One of the clips is uploading as we speak. Stay tuned!)

Ric and Jean did the hair for the Rosa Cha show and then alice + olivia immediately afterward and we were lucky enough to tag along.

Another highlight of the week was Logan Neitzel’s presentation, which I actually helped produce. (You may remember him from Project Runway?) He and I have mutual hairstylist friends from Gene Juarez Salons in Seattle and the whole crew of them (6 total) flew out to NY to style the show. They brought pre cut and colored wigs that they could fit on the girls and then style quickly. Clever, I thought. And it made for lighter suitcases. The models liked the idea less though – an hour into the show I had to sneak them backstage one at a time to snip the elastic on the inside of the wig to loosen it.

Bonus: The stylists left us with a duffel bag full of products.

Choppy bangs and simple ponytail wig. Get your own without the cut: shop Extensions on Folica

P.S. I’d wear everything Neitzel makes, but my favorite piece to date are his leather epaulettes. To me, they serve the same purpose as the messy bangs and ponytail look: add a little toughness to something soft or polished.

And if I had to stand behind one trend from the week though, it’d be the 70s hair (and clothes, makeup, accessories …). The best thing about that decade is that the there was a hairstyle for every hair texture. Curly? Go big with it and embrace an afro. Wavy? Try feathered layers ala Farrah Faucet. Straight? We all know that one: center part, long and sleek and if you’re really in the mood, try a headband around your crown.

Phew Fashion Week. Back to business as usual. Have a great weekend!

Hair-To Tuesday Recap

A couple weeks ago, Folica hosted its first Hair-To Tuesday event. The NYC office filled with guests, products, a pro stylist and food and wine for a night of hair how-tos and DIYs.

Highlights:

The Product Station: Learn which styling products are best for our hair type. Ask, or test and decide for yourself. Folica pros Charlene and Julie stand by to answer questions.

Styling Room: The theme of the night was Evening Hairstyles and this is where the magic happened. (It’s also our conference room, ha.) Folica pros and stylist Rudy Ruffo from Bangz salon were on hand to ‘do: curls, braids, buns, twists, straight, waves …

Goody Bags & Raffle: Each goody bag included gifts from Barex, Amika, Warren Tricomi and Oscar Blandi (shampoo, conditioner, styling crams and a Folica brush and hair towel). At the end of the night, we announced the raffle prize: a Sedu Revolution hair dryer and flat iron. Très bien!

5 Back to School Must-Haves

With summer ending oh-so-quickly and Back to School season approaching, a Folica shopping spree is totally necessary. Over the past 3 months, I’ve had the opportunity of testing every product at my Folica-fingertips. This involved likes and dislikes, or should I say… miracles and disasters (instructions are there for a reason).  Of course, the miracles are currently in my shopping cart and will be coming with me back to school, along with countless new HairJunky tricks of the trade.

Here’s my selection:

  1. Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray: Instantly turns my hair into fun beach hair.
  2. Tigi Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff: Makes straight hair smoother and adds awesome shine
  3. Oscar Blandi Volumizing Dry Shampoo: Definite must for those 20-minutes-to get-ready-no-time-to-wash-and-straighten-my-greasy-hair days.
  4. Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Crème: It adds an awesome amount of texture and shine to either straight or curly hair, not to mention the very pretty herbal smell- kind of eucalyptus and lavender-esque.

And last but not least, (drumroll…) a bit of good news:

5.  The Hot Tools Ceramic Tourmaline Deep Waver is back in stock on Folica! As Rachelle was just discussing, wavers are totally a go-to fave. What I love about this is that I can wave my hair and not have to worry about my roots. I leave them curly, this way I have more volume and the waves look natural. Definitely my new best friend.

Go back to school with great hair (and great deals). Check out Folica’s Back to School Shop!

Any more product suggestions for me before i go?

Contest: Remake Rosie’s Routine

HairJunky friend Rosie has fine, straight, color-treated hair that’s in need of a revival.

Rosie is ready for a new routine. Her products need replacing and her techniques a refresh – from start to finish.

The Goal: Thicker, healthier hair that’s safe from heat and color-fading without being weighed down by products or high maintenance.

The Game: You get to stock her shopping cart.

The PrizeS: TWO of you will win this contest. The prizes promise to oomph, repair, treat and remake your hair in thanks for your redoing Rosie’s.

Winner #1, chosen at random, will receive:

Winner #2, chosen by Rosie, will receive the Warren-Tricomi three-step system for repairing and strengthening weak or damaged hair, plus their Blow-Dry Lotion:

Hi. :) & 2 Products for a Heat-Proof Top Bun

Hello and Happy Tuesday HairJunky readers, friends, followers, et al. I hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend. HairJunky had the day off yesterday, which I spent in a loose braid and shades (these to be exact – they my fave) …

with a sweating glass of street-side Sauvignon Blanc. (It was 98 degrees too hot to think.) Oh, found a pic. Post braid and yeah, when no one was looking last week, I gave myself bangs again. HaWhoops.

Anyway, we’re back action today and rocking a top bun to make use of yesterday’s wavy volume and today’s temps necessitating hair-off-the-neck. Products:

  1. Oscar Blandi Pronto Gloss. Because: it’s a heat protectant, anti-frizz, UV guard and contains light reflectors like my secret weapon, Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer. (I’ve been using the Pronto Gloss almost daily and receiving compliments. Same thing happened with that illuminator. Light reflectors, I’m telling you. We’re all attracted to shiny things.) Used it only around my hairline where I flat ironed for smoothness. Left the rest a mess for a big, poofy top bun.

Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray. Because: I was feeling brand-loyal and love the scent of this spray (honeysuckle). + it adds a lightweight hold and subtle shine.

And now that we’re all reacquainted, let’s get down to business. I think, it’s time to shift the HairJunky focus.

We’ve been talking about curls, Keratin treatments, frizz-fighting and generally how to live with a heavy head of unruly kinks, coarseness and volume but how about the opposite side of the spectrum?

To start off the subject, how about we help out a fellow hair fan with her fine-thin-lifeless hair challenge? {Remake Rosie’s Routine}

Weekly Hair Recipe… Bananas.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be experimenting with a bunch of chemical-free, at-home deep conditioning recipes. All of the ingredients can be purchased in a supermarket, so they’re super cheap, and fun to make!

Last night I bought the following:

  1. Bananas
  2. Honey
  3. Yogurt
  4. Lemons
  5. (and some spinach for my dinner…)

I chose the banana recipe because it seems to do great things to hair. The potassium, natural oils, carbohydrates and vitamins are amazing for making hair softer and adding elasticity. Bananas can also make hair grow, and fight dandruff! Who knew it was such a hair-friendly fruit?

Here’s the recipe:

-1  partly-ripened banana- mashed up COMPLETELY
-½ cup plain yogurt (preferably not fat-free)
-3 tsp honey
-MIX ALL TOGETHER
-Squeeze half of a lemon (juice only) into the concoction
-Mix very well, making sure that the banana is as smooth as possible (trust me on this one).
-Let sit in the fridge while you shower so it thickens a bit.

I like to use a clarifying shampoo before using any kind of deep conditioner. This way, I know that my hair is totally clean and residue-free. Yesterday, I used Phillip B’s Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing and Clarifying Shampoo.

After showering, it’s time to apply the masque. I’m warning you: this is messy (you might want to apply it in the shower). Once it’s in, wrap your hair in cellophane and let it sit for 20-30 minutes.

Go back in the shower, and rinse. Again, I’m warning you: Banana is not easy to get out of your hair (use a comb, please). Seriously, though. It’s not easy to get out of your hair. At all. (It took me hm about an hour.)

Anyway, my hair instantly felt smoother and thicker. I let it air dry completely, and then I flat ironed. Such great results! My hair was immediately healthier than before. If you have some time on your hands (and don’t mind the smell of bananas), I really recommend trying this. You’ll feel like a kid again in the mess, but it’s definitely worth it. Have fun!

(And don’t say that I didn’t warn you. :) )

Stay tuned …  I have a few more of these up my sleeve!

Water Cooler Confessions

~ based on a true story

FADE IN: Folica headquarters. HairJunky is at the water cooler, concentrating on the spicket. She doesn’t notice Julie from Marketing approach. SLOW MOTION: Fluorescent light reflects off of Julie’s curls, creating a halo. A glow falls onto HairJunky’s Dixie cup.

Julie says: Heya HairJunky, ‘sup.

HairJunky: Monday funday. How are you? (Looks up.) WOW, your curls look amaze today!

Julie: Thanks!

HairJunky: No, seriously. What’d you do differently?

Julie: Actually, I was reading HairJunky and the post about co-washing and the Deva Curly Girl Method made me curious. I bought the DevaCurl travel kit so I could try the line without committing to the full size bottles before knowing if I liked it.

HairJunky: I’m with you – total fear of commitment.

Julie: Yeah but mine only extends to buying in bulk.

HairJunky: Oh.

Julie: Anyway the Deva really made a difference! I usually have so much frizz but none at all today. You can tell?

HairJunky: Yep, absolutely. Your curls look super shiny and defined.

Julie: Cool! I was a little afraid of the gel but it wasn’t sticky or anything.

HairJunky: That’s one fear I’ve managed to overcome. {Washing with Conditioner, Gel and the end of a Keratin Treatment}

Julie: Well, good luck with that other one and thanks for the product mention, HairJunky!
