Oscar Blandi Salon Visit

If you follow HairJunky on Twitter, you know that yesterday we were on a little mission at Oscar Blandi salon. What ever were we up to?

You’ll just have to wait and see. It’ll probably be worth it. But meanwhile, here’re some teaser photos and a couple of fun facts about the salon.

Oscar Blandi NYC is home to:

  • 30+ stylists and colorists,
  • A manicurist, facialist and a trichologist. (Say what? “Trichology is the branch of medicine that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp.” Wiki)
  • A mini jewelry boutique, (Oscar said clients come in and get their cut or color, feel great and then want top it off with something extra special, so, they buy some jewelry.)
  • And, an espresso bar.

At the salon cafe with Oscar:

  • Oscar says: May I offer you a coffee?
  • HairJunky says: I’d love one, thanks.
  • Oscar: What will it be, a Cappuccino? Americano?
  • HairJunky: An Espresso, please.
  • Oscar: Or, would you like to try my favorite? I don’t even know what it’s called – it’s a secret recipe – he makes it just for me. It’s delicious.
  • HairJunky: When in Rome!

I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t a shot of espresso in cream, topped with hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream, topped with a drizzle of chocolate syrup topped with a dusting of … more chocolate.

I guess now Oscar’s secret is out. Or, at least one of them. The rest, I’ll deliver to you soon. Until then:

Rita Hazan’s Rules of the Salon, via Blush

Today, Blush emailed a great write-up on The Rules of the Salon by celebrity hair stylist Rita Hazan, of Rita Hazan Salon on 5th Avenue in New York.

Hazan gives totally useful tips like: How much to, well, tip (20%), whether it’s okay to talk on your phone during an appointment (yes) and some of the biggest salon faux pas (chronic lateness and, you know, being rude).

My favorite quotes:

“It’s your time, your money, your hair. You call the shots, not the salon.”

And:

“If you don’t like your hair, say you don’t like your hair.”

ION Haps

Hey hi, looks like our friends over at ION Studio just launched a blog. I loved this backstage photo of the hair for the Bess fashion show:

I think the tousled updo is quite pretty. It’s flirty and feminine and smart. ION said that the inspiration was old, dusty doll hair. (Not to be repetitive, but: doll hair). What do you think the back looks like?

It’s also a style that you could wear by day. I’ve been looking for a daytime updo. Any other recommendations?

Yes, that’s Leo lurking back there and you can check out the ION blog, here. Warning: some of it is NSFW but despite the risqué, we’re glad to see that they’re up to good things.

Good 'Do Day
