Oscar Blandi Salon Visit

If you follow HairJunky on Twitter, you know that yesterday we were on a little mission at Oscar Blandi salon. What ever were we up to?

You’ll just have to wait and see. It’ll probably be worth it. But meanwhile, here’re some teaser photos and a couple of fun facts about the salon.

Oscar Blandi NYC is home to:

  • 30+ stylists and colorists,
  • A manicurist, facialist and a trichologist. (Say what? “Trichology is the branch of medicine that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp.” Wiki)
  • A mini jewelry boutique, (Oscar said clients come in and get their cut or color, feel great and then want top it off with something extra special, so, they buy some jewelry.)
  • And, an espresso bar.

At the salon cafe with Oscar:

  • Oscar says: May I offer you a coffee?
  • HairJunky says: I’d love one, thanks.
  • Oscar: What will it be, a Cappuccino? Americano?
  • HairJunky: An Espresso, please.
  • Oscar: Or, would you like to try my favorite? I don’t even know what it’s called – it’s a secret recipe – he makes it just for me. It’s delicious.
  • HairJunky: When in Rome!

I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t a shot of espresso in cream, topped with hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream, topped with a drizzle of chocolate syrup topped with a dusting of … more chocolate.

I guess now Oscar’s secret is out. Or, at least one of them. The rest, I’ll deliver to you soon. Until then:

Delivery Hair Styling

Today’s DailyCandy story is about Hair Room Service, a small team of hairstylists that makes house calls.

Lead by Michael Duenas, they’re avail M – F, 9 – 9 to cut, color or style / save the day.

An updo is timed at 120 minutes and runs $115. Blow dry: $85. Haircut: $125 ($85 for men). They’ll even do your makeup ($125).

And, guess who’s part of the HRS crew? Our friend Johnny DuCoin! (applause) Saw him last night at the Fashion for Passion fundraiser.

But, I failed my scouting mission this time by leaving my camera at home. (boos) Not next time, promise. (applause)

So. Would you order a delivery haircut, side of styling?

I sat down with Johnny for HairJunky’s first interview. Join us please and for the next week, Johnny will be on hand to answer your questions, so send them on over.

How would you describe your style? I’ve always been about what I call “feminine masculinity”: a tough attitude in a soft dress. Right now I’m wearing vintage pieces with modern ones and my hairstyle is pretty punk – shaved sides and very blonde (I’m a natural brunette)!

What do you love most about working in hair? The idea of creating everything with my hands.

Absolute favorite hair product? I could never say, I love so many! Pureology products are fabulous though …

Three hair musts that we should all be doing: Condition your hair more often than you wash it. Learn how to use a blow-dryer. Always use heat protectants when flat ironing!

Who is your dream client, living or dead? Hard to answer, each client brings something different to me.

What would (or will) be the title of your biography? I’ve never really thought about it! Probably something about the good, the bad and the ugly. I’d definitely have hair stories, make-up stories, star-styling secrets and tales about having lived and traveled all over.

Best hair you’ve seen or done? Lately, I’ve been perfecting my curling*, but I love my craziest hairstyles too. I did an amazing Marie Antoinette style recently for one of my girlfriend’s birthday party. Her hair is shoulder length and I added extensions going in the opposite direction!

*(Johnny created beautiful curls for my friend and clothing designer Jill Lindsey’s Fall look book. I helped produce the photo shoot last weekend – photos and video to come!)

What do you hope to achieve with your career? So much that I’d never want to limit myself by writing it all down!

If you weren’t a hairstylist, what would you be? A fashion designer.

What inspires you? Fashion, culture, the streets of NYC and the world!
