Holiday Hair How-Tos & Contest

Holiday Hair How-Tos are live on Folica today and I’m loving seeing our headquarters hair fans in the limelight!

Check out our in-house Kardashian lookalike Charlene DIYing the Classic Evening Waves style:

AND, note the accompanying contest: email a photo and LIKE Folica on FB to win something rad.

This was a fun project to put together. Yours truly took the photos (in the conference room that’s notorious for hair-play by now) and each willing participant dived into boxes of products and tools in order to recreate the celebrity look.

What do you think? I hope you like! Which look is your favorite?

I think I’d like to highlight a look a week. And do a giveaway in conjunction with the Facebook contest. So, look #1 is Texture Tresses. Steps below and the giveaway goes like this:

In a comment, tell me which product or tool on Folica you would use to get this week’s style. (Include a link!)

Example: *I* would use Sedu Beach Beauty Sea Salt Spray to get the Texture Tresses.

Bonus entry points (+1 extra entry each):

  1. ReTweet this contest.
  2. Share the contest on your Facebook page.
  3. Enlist your friends (if they mention you in their comment, you’ll both get an extra entry point).

Enjoy!

Contest Update

Rachel (Rae) sent us photos so we can see what we’re working with.

Rae says: They show my hair at various lengths, although it’s about 2 inches below my shoulder now, at its longest, plus some semi-shaggy layers and freshly cut side swept bangs. (My “pic in dress” being the bridesmaid dress of course.) I’m not lacking in number of hairs, but it is very very fine.

Not huge on hair maintenance so I got a global keratin treatment about a month ago. (Hence the bangs!) So minimal frizz, minimal waves, but minimal volume/spunk/oomph, which I want.

P. S. The bride is doing a low loose and to-the-side messy bun, which is my normal go-to, which is part of why I’m suddenly, sadly, helpless.

SO excited to see how this goes. Thank you so much!

{contest details are in the post below}

Contest: Remake Rosie’s Routine

HairJunky friend Rosie has fine, straight, color-treated hair that’s in need of a revival.

Rosie is ready for a new routine. Her products need replacing and her techniques a refresh – from start to finish.

The Goal: Thicker, healthier hair that’s safe from heat and color-fading without being weighed down by products or high maintenance.

The Game: You get to stock her shopping cart.

The PrizeS: TWO of you will win this contest. The prizes promise to oomph, repair, treat and remake your hair in thanks for your redoing Rosie’s.

Winner #1, chosen at random, will receive:

Winner #2, chosen by Rosie, will receive the Warren-Tricomi three-step system for repairing and strengthening weak or damaged hair, plus their Blow-Dry Lotion:

Going Natural: Diffuser Required

I’m the first person to admit that my natural hair is far from tame. Though, I am thankful for its habit of absorbing oil and allowing me to rarely wash it. (I find it tricky to wear my hair natural.) The one thing that’s been most helpful managing the natural curls my genes so generously provided is: my diffuser (Babyliss Pro, paired with the BaByliss PRO TT (Carrera 2) Tourmaline 3000 Dryer.)

+

Recently, my hair has been behaving very, very strangely (as you saw in the picture on Friday). I’m constantly trying to embrace it, but it can be tough! Right now, I have thick frizzy curls close to my roots and inside my mane, but the outside layer of my hair has been drying straight and frizzy.  Does anyone else have this problem? It’s SUCH a challenge! But, I’m up for it.

In the pursuit of better curls, my diffuser has become my best friend. My hair still curls underneath, and with the help of some leave-in conditioner and mousse, I’m able to diffuse the rest and force my straight pieces into almost-curly waves. It’s as close as I can come to my old curls, and it’s the only thing that’s worked (so far). In that case, all hail the diffuser.

Anyone have interesting diffuser stories or tips? I’d love to hear. And we’ll have a really fun know-all guide to diffusers very soon, so keep an eye out for more diffuser tips!

Oh- and It’s almost Friday…just saying.

Ask & Answer: Croc, Hai, Solia and CHI

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend? Any good hair stories to share with me? I tried my other gel yesterday and today I’m playing around with anti-afro products because humidity is 80%. I’ll give you a report a little later but meanwhile I wanted to open it up for you to share some tips with hair junkies in need of advice. It’s like help a neighbor out. Good Sam-hair-itan day? Ha, I like that. Maybe this becomes a weekly HairJunky feature?

Here’s how it works: There’s a feature on Folica called Ask & Answer where you do just that. We keep an eye on things to make sure that questions receive answers, but we try not to meddle too much. It’s really an open forum for all of you to Q&A, share tips, trade tricks, gossip, whatev.

Below are a couple of ‘Asks’ that came in last week and haven’t been answered yet. Do you want to answer them? If you do, will you post your answer in a comment here too so HairJunky readers can see what you write?

And, please let me know if you think this is fun. I personally think it is but who knows, maybe my definition needs updating … :)

THE ASKS:

  • Chelsea in Pittsburgh says: I Love It/Help Me Pick One!

“I don’t have the croc yet, but my best friend does. I am mixed with very curly hair. About a year ago my grandma bought me a CHI I didn’t want it, I wanted the Paul Mitchell hair straightener. I absolutely hate the CHI! i went over my friends house before a party and used it for the first time. I was so stunned about the outcome of my frizzy hair. I just need help on which one to buy, I have my heart stuck on the croc 2 infrared for 150, but I don’t know. Please help me out, thanks!”

Answer Chelsea.

  • From Carla: Hai vs. Solia vs. another Hai?

I have owned a Hai convertible for over 4 years now and I love it! but I dropped it and it broke so I am looking into purchasing another flat iron. I don´t know if I should stay with the same Hai or go with the Hai elite nano xt, or purchase a Solia. I am a redhead and have a lot of hair, it is wavy and pretty long. I want my hair to look healthy and shiny, and I straighten it and curl it. What do you recommend?”

Answer Carla.

  • And a super easy one from Mel: Brazilian Blowout Friendly?

“Can this be used after getting the Brazilian Blowout Treatment?”

Answer Mel.

Washing with Conditioner, Gel and the end of a Keratin Treatment

Hi. I learned a lot about hair last night. Here ’tis. :)

1. Washing with Conditioner: As you know, I’m not really a fan of washing my hair. I prefer how it looks and behaves when it’s a little bit dirty (less frizz, less wild, a little shaggy – second-day hair feels effortlessly done/undone). But, until they invent a way to wash without washing, (er, dry shampoo anyone? We’ll talk about that this week too.) I lather up about once or twice a week.

Readers Gi and Lauren encouraged me to try washing with conditioner. So, last night I did. The practice makes sense, but I was skeptical. (Would it just make my hair heavy and dull and greasy? I go so long between washes, don’t I need the shampoo-cleanse? Why bother if you’re not washing it?)

But, they were right, washing with conditioner left my hair soft and clean and moisturized. I’d say it’s second-day clean. So I went from dirty to second-day and simply skipped the poofy phase. Perfect. From now on, I’ll be doing this at least every-other wash. Gi and Lauren: Thank you!

Conditioner of choice: Frederic Fekkai Luscious Curls Conditioner

2. Gel: Empowered by the successful hair experiment above, I decided to try another: the gel that’s been patiently waiting for me to overcome my fear that it would relocate me to 1989. I used to use gel. In 1989. I would sculpt Gateway Arch bangs. My brothers used it to create lethal side spikes.

But, with faith in a decade of product development and encouraged by the fact that there are so many formulas on the market today (Folica currently carries 103 different gels – the competition is stiff (ha) to provide a quality product) – I embarked.

I actually had two bottles, both unopened:

I chose the Nexxus since I’m familiar with (and like) John Frieda products. Applied a walnut size drop (conservative for me) to damp hair and let air dry for about 40 minutes. I scrunched a few times and didn’t feel any of the feared crunch so applied another walnut size, mostly on the ends. Dried with a Sedu Revolution Pro Tourmaline Ionic TGR 4000i Hair Dryer – the best dryer I’ve ever used. A few minutes with heat and then with the cool shot.

The result? I’m still in the year 2010 and my curls loved the gel. They’re soft, full and strong. No frizz, no stickiness, no crunch. I’ve used a curl cream for years; I’m changing my ways. How long do you think it’d take to try all 103 gels?

3. The end of a Keratin Treatment: Talking about my curls again must mean that the Keratin treatment has all washed out. True indeed. Bounce is back without a sign of grow out. That was my last concern with the treatment – despite promises of no grow out, could something SO effective at straightening, smoothing, flattening, taming my otherwise pretty unmanageable mane really leave no mark? Yeah.

(Well, after I took this photo I realized that my curls are still a little straighter than before. Partly because I slept on them, and maybe I have another ‘un’wash or two left before the Keratin’s all gone. Nonetheless, no weird grow out line.

Highlights:)

  1. Washing with Conditioner: Definitely Do. Do you?
  2. Gel: Definitely Do! Do you? :)
  3. The end of a Keratin Treatment: No grow out = curls return to HairJunky and the process gets two thumbs up.

Pretty good day for hair knowhow, huh? What do you say?
