Short Hair for Fall, and a Style Icon

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s short hair appreciation comes Refinery29′s story today about the Best Short Hairstyles for Fall.

The Curly Bob is #1 (The Boy Cut and The Messy Bob following it up) which you may recall was my claim to HerCut fame earlier in the year.

The woman on the right up in the first photo is Yasmin Sewell, the Chief Creative Consultant for Liberty of London and one of my favorite fashion icons. She has fantastic style – a functional, classic, eclecticism – and her hair always looks great.

She’s worn it short and curly for years and I appreciate that it never looks over- or under-done. That can be challenging for curly girls.

Pre Keratin and Brazilian Blowout, I was on a mission to master that: simply, nicely styled hair, every day. (Oh, actually, I just went back to find the post and see that I would have been happy with good hair “four days a week”.) {Spring Training: Rachelle’s Style Revamp} That lead to Trend Run, which lead to the Keratin treatment, which lead to the Brazilian Blowout … ah how far we’ve come.

NYFW: 3 Fave Hair Trends & Backstage Photos

The whirlwind that is New York Fashion Week attracted trendsetters from all across the globe and HairJunky was there to scout out the newest hairstyles and how-tos for spring. From backstage and the front row, here are a few of our favorite finds and snapshots.

Top chignons (not to be confused with top buns) at Rosa Cha, by Ric Pipino and Jean Marc of Pipino Nolita and the Revolution in Cut product line. Yes, the dynamic duo from our salon visit a couple of weeks ago. (We shot a bunch of video that day that I’m still working on. One of the clips is uploading as we speak. Stay tuned!)

Ric and Jean did the hair for the Rosa Cha show and then alice + olivia immediately afterward and we were lucky enough to tag along.

Another highlight of the week was Logan Neitzel’s presentation, which I actually helped produce. (You may remember him from Project Runway?) He and I have mutual hairstylist friends from Gene Juarez Salons in Seattle and the whole crew of them (6 total) flew out to NY to style the show. They brought pre cut and colored wigs that they could fit on the girls and then style quickly. Clever, I thought. And it made for lighter suitcases. The models liked the idea less though – an hour into the show I had to sneak them backstage one at a time to snip the elastic on the inside of the wig to loosen it.

Bonus: The stylists left us with a duffel bag full of products.

P.S. I’d wear everything Neitzel makes, but my favorite piece to date are his leather epaulettes. To me, they serve the same purpose as the messy bangs and ponytail look: add a little toughness to something soft or polished.

And if I had to stand behind one trend from the week though, it’d be the 70s hair (and clothes, makeup, accessories …). The best thing about that decade is that the there was a hairstyle for every hair texture. Curly? Go big with it and embrace an afro. Wavy? Try feathered layers ala Farrah Faucet. Straight? We all know that one: center part, long and sleek and if you’re really in the mood, try a headband around your crown.

Phew Fashion Week. Back to business as usual. Have a great weekend!

Fall Hair Trends: Prediction #1: Bed Head

It may feel a bit early to be hypothesizing about fall hair trends but consider this: if long layers will be all the rage, it’d help to start growing out bangs now, right? Or say you’ll be subscribing to the shaved-side look: planning ahead will allow you to spend the next two months enjoying hairstyle symmetry, and bolstering your chop confidence.

If nothing else, it’s fun to guess at what’ll be all the rage. We’ll surely get some right, there’ll definitely be something we didn’t predict, and regardless of what the headlines declare, we’ll proceed with styling our hair however we xyz well please. Yes? Okay then.

Today Jillian starts us off with a trend I can totally stand behind (and not only because it’s nearly effortless to achieve).

Bed Hair

Jillian: A hairstyle that’s as simple as getting out of bed? Love it. It’s easy, fun and super sexy. Spray in some texturizing spray, mess your hair up a little bit, and voila. Merely waking up completes the look. And, I mean, Kate Moss has been wearing it for pretty much ever.

Rachelle: Sold. Though I suspect there’s some sentiment that this is not a look, it’s simply a mess. Personally, I think it’s both and a delicate balance. My mom would disagree, but I find it sexy and youthful when paired with a gorgeous dress and heels, say. Because: you don’t leave the house in Lanvin but forget to do your hair. It’s purposefully casual and natural, which to me suggests confidence. Perfectly imperfect. Making an effort not to look like you tried too hard. Oh irony.

Jillian: Ashley Olsen at this year’s Golden Globes.

Rachelle: Exactly.

Jillian: I have to try it.

Rachelle: Ditto. (Wondering if it justifies buying Lanvin for balance? …)

long hair with bangs. Love that look. To me, it’s very French. Mike at Sally H’s told me to grow my bangs out. Maybe I disobey.

Do any of you wear this look? Like, love, don’t? Want warm enough weather to wear sheer rainbow+ruffle dresses? Me too.

Bohemian Braid by Johnny Lavoy

The setup had me a little scared about difficulty level here but it’s actually totally doable. I love it. Imagine what you could weave into a braid. My aunt used to do dandelions. Today, I’d like to see fabric – satin, velvet or suede? Anyone else? Inspired?

Trend Run Rachelle: Day 7: Barneys Baby

Who got their Barneys CO-OP catalog last week? I did! Today’s pompadour was thus inspired.

Runway:  Rachelle’s coffee table.

Style: Straight sides; party on top.

Spotted by: Yours truly.

Styling: Tried the much-acclaimed CHI Iron Guard for the third time (once before on my hair and once on Blair’s, which is much finer than mine) but didn’t like. I find it too sticky. Used (a lot of) CHI Silk Infusion, which is now definitely my favorite heat protectant / straightening product. + the trusty Sedu. Straightened everything below my temples, and my bangs. Smoothed with Barex Cristalli Liquidi (smells awesome). Left curls on top from yesterday for volume. Twisted top section of hair a couple of times and pushed it up at the crown (basically  made it into a Bumpit). Pinned with two jumbo pins and let ends go awry in back. Pinned bangs with one small pin. Sprayed with Rusk Sensories Bright Chamomile and Lavender Brightening Hairspray and then some CHI Shine Infusion Thermal Polishing Spray.

Had to wash my hands four times to get all the slick products off but now skin is super soft.

Styling Time: 40 minutes

Styling Skill Level: 3. Patience: 4.5.

Street Story: Feel like rousing some rabble Rebel Without a Cause style so if you spot a street fight set to music on Madison Ave today, may be us.

Trend Run Rachelle: Day 6: Victoria's Secret Hair

Woke up and did a side-braid this morning but it was too easy so it was style-on-the-fly-time (not my forte). I like a plan but am pretty happy with the result and maybe later I do the side-braid again and we get a two-for-one Trend Run today.

Inspired by Blair’s mention that the style she’d love to be able to master is Victoria’s Secret hair, I aimed for that + Chloe’s center-part.

Runway:  Victoria’s Secret and Chloe

Style: Center part, loose, shiny curls

Spotted by: JuicyStar07

Styling: Gave hair a much-needed wash yesterday and hope no one’s keeping track of how long that run was (Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Clairfying Shampoo). Rehydrated with the truly luxurious Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Curl Masque, which I worked through hair and left in. (Makes my hair so soft and shiny and curls are springy – it’s definitely a treat.) Center parted, worked the Bumble Does It All + Sedu flat iron to create curls twisting away from face and at temple-level and below.

Sprayed with industry fave L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray for Normal Hold and then pulled curls apart. (Brushing didn’t work right – separating with fingers is the way to do it.) Sprayed again, swung hair over shoulder and said, cheese.

Styling Time: 30ish minutes

Street Story: This is an ultra-feminine style; who wants to flirt?

Trend Run Rachelle: Day 5: Top Bun

Hoping it’s not a copout to try this style since Jan already did,. It’s such a trend right now,  I had to run it. Plus, it’s Friday. And, it’s raining.

Runway: Lanvin

Style: A sleek soft-top.

Spotted by: HairJunky via Fashionising (and pretty much everyone else)

Styling: Still working with dirty hair. Anyone want to count how many different products are in it at this point? I’m impressed but it’s still not greasy – just kind of a nest from yesterday’s style, but I wanted that dry texture and volume for a full bun.

Used a liberal amount of CHI Silk Infusion around hairline (skipped the crown since it’d be covered by the bun). The product is definitely heavy and it looked greasy when I put it in, but after a couple of runs through the flat iron, it essentially disappeared into my hair, which surprised me but was exactly what I wanted. Hair was smooth, not sticky despite what’s on it.

Brushed into a tight top ponytail, secured with elastic, divided into three sections, wrapped and pinned in opposite directions. Hairspray. And skipped the shine spray, still digging matte.

Street Story: A charming homeless fellow said, “My, I sure like how you’ve got your hair today – you’re just too cute to give me change.”

Trend Run Rachelle: Day 4: Frizz

Runway: Chanel, Prada

Style: Frizz

Spotted by: Refinery29

Styling: Brushed out yesterday’s party-on-top. Flat ironed large sections at a time (about five total). The tricky part was being light and quick with the iron; not squeezing it all the way closed and moving through the sections quickly straightened out the curls, but didn’t smooth frizz or create shine.

Natural texture and dirty hair helped the volume (obviously mine doesn’t really get greasy). I imagine super-clean hair would also wear this look well.

Deep-parted bangs and haphazardly pinned under the ends to see a different shape.

Definitely wanted to add crimped sections but I’ve got to keep some styling tricks up my sleeve for the rest of Trend Run.

Styling Time: 15 minutes (surprised me – I expected longer. Will definitely be wearing again.)

Styling Skill: 3

Street: Fun to look at in windows. Nothing more exciting to report yet.

Trend Run Rachelle: Day 3: New Wave Updo

Runway: Fendi (meets FW’s front-row fave, Rihanna)

Style: Tight sides, tousled top

Spotted by: Primped

Styling: Working with the third-day-hair bird’s nest and no product or tools, I just grabbed all my hair in back and twisted (really tightly – felt kind of bad for it actually) into a Rihanna-shaped updo (ends flopped forward, creating volume on top and bangs). Pinned with two jumbo bobby-pins and looked at the clock: 5 minutes flat.

Then, I debated going back to sleep for the extra hour I’d allowed myself for styling but instead opted to take the style down and do it properly:

Flat ironed bottom half of hair (temples and below) with Bumble Does it All and a Sedu iron.

Gathered hair at neck and twisted tightly (French Twist ish) up back of head, tried pinning, failed.

Repeated. 3 times.

Took a deep breath, used some muscle (forcefulness is proving surprisingly profitable) … success. Sprinkled some water on the bangs to reactivate curls. Finished with CHI Shine Infusion Thermal Polishing Spray.

Styling Time: 45 minutes

Skill: 4

Street: I’ll let you know after lunch.
