Holiday Hair How-Tos & Contest

Hey hi Happy Monday!

This is Week Two of Holiday Hair How-Tos and today we’re featuring the Party-It-Up-‘Do.

Our buyer Noelle turned a simple, low ponytail into a pretty updo. Try it high, low or on the side. Add accessories for fun or none for a more minimal style.

Remember, there’s an accompanying contest on Folica (email a photo and LIKE Folica on FB to win something special) AND, I’m doing a giveaway in conjunction with the Facebook fun.

The giveaway goes like this:

In a comment, tell me which product or tool on Folica you would use to get this week’s style (and include a link).

That’s it! At the end of the five weeks of styles, I’ll announce a winner for each week.

Bonus entry points (+1 extra entry each):

  1. ReTweet this contest.
  2. Share the contest on your Facebook page.
  3. Enlist your friends (if they mention you in their comment, you’ll both get an extra entry point).

Urban Outfitters & J.Crew Hairstyling Inspiration

Beautiful flying hair on the cover of the new U.O. Fall Catalog!

J.Crew always does gorgeous hair too. Masters of the unstyled style, no?  Shiny and whispy … romantic but not overdone … sophisticated, feminine and playful. I love it and it makes me want to embrace natural texture. Encourage hair to be free, rather than fighting it. Which sounds like the Folica, “Is your hair getting enough playtime?” tagline. :)

A piece perfectly out of place:

Flowers and tulle:

Hehe:

And tons of charming updo ideas:

Where do you find hairstyling inspiration?

Double Bun Just For Fun

Double exposure top-bun shot from photographer Kathy Lo as featured on Urban Outfitters’ blog. Pretty.

I like that the bun in the larger of the two portraits is off-center with ends left loose on the side. It seems like a simple updo. Though, top buns in general are pretty hard to do wrong. I like them when my hair is a couple days dirty. Good for height. Here’s my style trial {Trend Run: Top Bun} and Jan’s {Jan in March: Day 2}.

Prom Hair Update

Started the week off with prom hair – let’s end it that way too. StyleOff update!

Gorgeous green:

Finger wave, which we learned from Jan is no easy task.

Fairytale:

Also a fairytale:

100+ photos (all in just a week!) in Folica’s Facebook album.

Jan in March: Day 2

The countdown continues. Today with an on-trend crown-topping messy bun.

Day 2:

Styling: Unwashed hair pulled into a high pony and secured with an elastic band. Divided the pony in two, wrapping one side clockwise around the base of pony and then the other side counter-clockwise. Secured with bobby pins and finished with Nick Chavez Volumizing Extra Hold Hairspray.

Inside scoop from Oloffbeauty

Oloffbeauty, the sponsor of the Barex Italiana’ s hair team for New York Fashion Week, just sent us some fun press about the hair created for Monique Lhuillier’s show: Buns, braided with black satin. Simple, lovely and …. it kind of reminds me of a modern Scrunchie (yep, went there). My list of hair tricks to try is growing by the hour.

Photos, videos, how-to’s and products, here ya go!

(Word is they’ll have step-by-step how-tos in the next couple of days; I’ll let you know!)

THE LOOK

The collection had a strong Chinese warrior theme, so I decided to create a graphic, high-shine knotted sculpture on the top of the models’ heads. I really wanted the style to seem more like a piece of fabric than hair. I didn’t want anything soft or realistic.”  Rudi Lewis, Barex Style Team Leader.

THE PRODUCTS

Hair was sprayed with Barex Gloss Hairspray, divided into sections and pulled up to the crown and tied into little ponytails. These were soaked with Barex Volumizzante Spray and Barex Tricolife Serum and then braided with black satin. Fabric-hair braid was then piled up and pinned in place – finished with Gloss Hairspray.

More details on the hair from Modern Salon, WWD and OK magazine, and the Fashion at Style.com.

Bun Run

Earlier this week, theCut covered Fashion Week’s bun trend:

We saw it at the twentyten’s fall 2010 fashion presentation too, though they interpreted it with synthetic hair and leather swim caps.

What do you think? Work-day wearable, or weekend-only? Reminds me of the doll hair idea.

I’d like to see this look done for nighttime. Maybe add a headband or some feathers. I’ll give it a run here soon and report back. If you beat me to it – send los fotos!

Happy Thursday!

Fashion Week: Geren Ford at The Crosby Hotel

Due to the NY Blizzard Warning, I opted for hair au-natural. (Curls that would get an extra bounce from winter winds rather than a more coiffed look that would just fail en route.)

Pre-show prep included shampoo and conditioner with Frederic Fekkai Color Care Shampoo and Luscious Curls Conditioner. Towel dried, applied Moroccanoil Curl Cream and then let hair air-dry while I checked Folica.com email and did some work on our newest contest. (It’s called StyleOff (sponsored by Sedu) and you make a video, showing how you use Sedu to create a transformational hairstyle. The prizes are grreat: $1,000, tools and a feature on the site/here on HairJunky. I definitely recommend that you savvy stylists check it out.)

Before heading out the door, I smoothed my bangs and around-face curls with Bumble Does-it-all and my Sedu flat iron. Messed the whole look up a little (standard routine) and then sprayed with Rusk hairspray. Ready!

Thankfully The Crosby Hotel isn’t too far from my apartment, so I grabbed an umbrella (no beanie, despite the trend) and off we went. Mind you, I was in heels (mid-height boots to be somewhat reasonable) because: one has to – it’s fashion. My usual rule is no flats after nightfall, but blizzard or no, attending a fashion show, must must be done in heels. Made it.

la lobby

Pretty people milling around downstairs which made for good hairstyle-spying  before the show. After about 30 minutes of fashionably-late waiting, the models exited a side door, did a walk through the crowd and then took their stances on podiums in a gallery-style room.

Photographers and fashion folk filed in after them, snapping pictures, fingering hems and oo-ahing at the trims, tapers and tucks.

Bumble and bumble sponsored the show and the hair they created was quite pretty. Classic and doable for day or night. All soft curls and pinned into a bob-length.

bobs abound

But, my favorite hair of the night was on two of the attendees. Blogger lovelies www.theGlamourai.com (left), and www.whatisrealityanyway.com (right) who’s a Leo like me. Observe the mane. She even has a streak of color like the one I recently got.

I think we’re going to be friends.

What do you think? Is the hair boring or beautiful? If you try it out, send me a photo!

More to come as Fash Week progresses. Happy Wednesday, hair-ists.

Yours,
